Drowns in fishing pond near Mclaurin
The body of Otis Lee, about 60, was recovered from a small fishing pond located on a farm just south of Mclaurin around 7 p.m. Saturday.
Officials launched the search for Lee, who had been caretaker at Johnson State Park for four months, after the owner of the farm were Lee lived alone in a house trailer discovered a fishing boat overturned in the pond about 4 p.m. and failed to locate Lee.
Farm owner C.W. Johnson said he also found a 16 gauge unloaded shotgun lying on the seat of a second boat and a fishing pole floating in the pond.
Johnson, who had gone to the farm to get some corn, is superintendent of Johnson State Park.
The Forrest County Sheriff's department sent units to the area and called in several rescue teams, including one unit of the Hattiesburg Fire Dept. Dragging operations began shortly after dark.
Neighbors said Lee was a native of McLaurin but had been living eleswhere for several years. He returned a few months ago to take the job at the state park.
