Burge, Gertrude L Estep: (1880-1966);
"Mrs Fred Burge (Gertrude) passed away of a massive occlusion, Saturday afternoon (Sept 3) at Lincoln hospital in Davenport. She became ill Friday night, at the home of her daughter, Mrs Henry Vick, in Harrington, and was brought to the hospital that night. Mrs Burge spent much of the summer of 1965 at the Vick home following a long hospitalization after she was injured in a car accident. She returned to her home late last fall, and this Feb 27, she fell at her home, fracturing her hip. Again she was hospitalized for several weeks. She went to the home of her son, Clyde Burge, when she could leave the hospital, and July 12 went to her daughter's home, the Henry Vick's in Harrington.
Gertrude Estep was born Sept 5, 1880 at Petaluna, CA, to Mr and Mrs Henry Estep. She was brought by her parents to Washington Territory, when she was a baby. The travelers came by covered wagon, and during this long trip, baby Gertrude learned to walk. The Esteps settled on a farm north of Davenport. Gertrude and others of the Estep children rode horseback to attend the Davenport schools. As a young woman, Miss Estep joined the Methodist church.
In 1899, in the Methodist parsonage, Miss Estep and Fred Burge exchanged their marriage vows. Their children, Beatrice and Clyde, were born in Davenport. In 1905 the Burge family moved to the Coast and in 1917 they returned to Lincoln County, settling on a farm in the Mohler area. Mr Burge passed away in 1949 and Mrs Burge returned to make her home in Davenport.
Besides her membership in the Methodist church, she was a member of Naomi Circle, and the Homemakers Demonstration Club.
Surviving are her children, Mrs Henry Vick (Beatrice) of Harrington, and Clyde Burge of Davenport; a brother, Gloyd Estep, College Place, Washington; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren; also nephews and nieces, including Mrs Hazel Burge Defabaugh of Harrington.
