Major League Baseball Player. The first baseman-outfielder played eight years in the big leagues with the New York Giants (1936, 1939 to 1942, 1946 to 1947), the Cincinnati Reds (1947 to 1948) and the St. Louis Cardinals (1948). In 1940, the left-handed batter hit .286 with 27 doubles, 17 homers and 101 runs batted in. He followed that up with .265, 28 doubles, 25 homers and 104 RBIs in 1941. He spent three years in the military (1943 to 1945). The Giants traded him to the Reds on June 7, 1947 for pitcher Joe Beggs. That year while splitting the season with the two clubs, he hit .275 with 14 homers and 79 RBIs. His lifetime statistics read as follows: .273, 121 doubles, 79 homers, 415 RBIs.
