During the month of February, the 1st Battalion continued to participate in Operation Kentucky with Company D under the operational control of the 9th Marines operating in the Cam Lo area along Routes 9 and 1 in northern Quang Tri Province.
On February 2, elements of Company D at the Cam Lo District Headquarters came under a heavy ground attack by the NVA. Fighting continued until day break when the enemy withdrew. Five Marines were killed in action and thirteen were wounded, one of the casualties was LCpl Roger Kelly who was killed in the action by hostile gunshot wounds.
