Matthew was born at the old Providence Hospital on Eighteenth Street, then transferred to the old Children's Mercy Hospital on Independence Avenue in Kansas City, Missouri where he died.

Matthew's oldest brother, Michael and his wife Janie, named their oldest son Matthew Eric to honor his infant brother. Matthew has another older brother, Mark and an older sister, Shaleen who preceeded him in death. Matthew is buried at the foot of her grave.
His death is mourned by his mother and a very large extended family.
