C. Earl "Squirrel" Callaham, 78, a former shipyard worker and Bainbridge Island's first full-time paid fire chief, died Sunday at his home on the island.

He was born Feb. 25, 1906, in Buckley, Pierce County, and attended schools in Charleston, Bremerton, Port Orchard, and Bainbridge Island.

He married Signie Sofia Carlson June 23, 1929, in Olympia. She died in February of this year.

The couple moved in 1936 from Olympia to Bainbridge Island, where Mr. Callaham worked as a dockmaster at the old Winslow Railway Shipyard, which later was known as Commercial Ship Repair. After its closure, he worked as an assistant dockmaster at Lake Union in Seattle.

In 1959 the Kitsap County Bainbridge Island Fire Department hired Callaham as the first full-time paid fire chief. He retired from that post in 1971.

Mr. Callaham was past worshipful master of Renton Lodge 29, F&AM, on Bainbridge; past president of Washington State Fire Chiefs Association, and past president of Kitsap-Mason County Fireman's Association.

He is survived by two sons, Charles E. and Richard, both of Bainbridge Island; a brother, Hayden, also of Bainbridge; and five grandchildren.
