During World War II Bruce served as a Second Lieutenant and Bombardier on B-24H #42-64446, 721st Bomber Squadron, 450th Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force.

He resided in New Castle County, Delaware prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on April 14, 1941, prior to the war, in Trenton, New Jersey. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as an Athlete, sports instructor, and/or sports official and also as Single, without dependents.

B-24H #42-64446 took off, with a crew of 10, from Manduria, Italy on a bombing mission over the Aero-Engine works near Steyr, Austria. 10 minutes before the target approximately 75 German Fighter's attacked the squadron. B-24H #42-64446 was hit and fire was seen coming from the fuselage and the waste window. They were also seen crashing in Austria.

Five of the crew were "Killed In Action" in this crash and five became POW's of the German Army.

Bruce was one of the five that became a POW from this crash and he survived the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
