In 1916 Ubaldo was drafted into the Italian Army in WWI. Since he was a musician at the time he played the contra bassoon in the Army Band. When he found out that in the battle field the band members would go into the front and rescue wounded soldiers. He then transferred to drive a truck and delver ammunition, food and supplies to the fighting men.

After the two daughters Alfea and Cesira were born, circa 1922, while in Italy he found out that he was going to be called up again to fight in Ethiopia, Africa. He decided to get out of Italy and come to the United States. His wife Rita did not want to follow in the other wives footsteps and said she was also moving to the United States. The family moved to the United States and became United State citizens.
