Gail Phyllis Paglia, 63, of Las Vegas and Miami Beach, Fla., and formerly of Philadelphia, and Brigantine, N.J., went to be with the Lord July 11, 2010, after a courageous struggle with breast cancer.

She will long be remembered as a vivacious, loving soul and devoted mother, sister and aunt. Gail was a gifted hostess; her dinner and holiday parties were a coveted invite. The daughter of Nick and Virginia Paglia, she was born June 4, 1947, in Cleveland, and was raised in Cleveland and Las Vegas, where she attended Western High School and later met her future husband, Michael D'Annunzio, who was stationed at Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas. The couple married in 1965 and relocated to Parma, Ohio, where her son, Michael D'Annunzio, Jr., was born, as well as Freeport, Texas, and Philadelphia, where her son, Nick D'Annunzio, was born. In 1979, the family moved to Brigantine, N.J., where she and her then-husband, Michael, started Bayshore Builders. After her divorce, Gail was an entrepreneur, opening Custom Closet Design in Brigantine and, after moving back to Las Vegas, Me-O-My Pizza Pie, a popular Italian restaurant, where she cooked everything from scratch and lent her employees her Mercedes convertible to deliver pizzas. Gail, the consummate shopper, then went into retail, selling designer clothing and couture at the Golden Nugget, Mirage, Bellagio and Neiman Marcus, in Las Vegas. After retiring at age 57, Gail moved to Miami Beach, where she loved to entertain, preparing her famous Italian specialties for family and friends.

Sadly, shortly after arriving in Miami Beach, Gail learned of her illness. She battled cancer for almost six years. Her message was for women to take a more active role in their health and second-guess their physicians if needed. While in Las Vegas, her request for an ultrasound was refused when she had pains in her ductal area, despite having a history of breast calcifications and subsequent lumpectomy. It was not until she relocated to Miami and was treated by her excellent team at Mt. Sinai Cancer Center, Drs. Schwartz, Reynolds and Mesko, did she learn she was terminal at Stage 4. This could have been prevented. Although she was given only one to three years to live, she stunned her doctors with a five-and-a-half-year run.

Gail is survived by her son, Nick D'Annunzio; future daughter-in-law, Tara Solomon; sisters, Christine (husband, Richard) Amato and Rosemary Paglia; nieces, Tina (husband, Greg) Pyle and Nicole (husband, Steve) Grau; sister-in-law, Marianne Paglia; nieces, Alex Paglia and Gia Paglia; nephews, Nicholas Paglia, III and Christian Amato; great-nephews, Dustin and Richard Amato, Jr.; and great-nieces, Brooke and Lauren Pyle and Amanda Amato.

Gail goes to rest in peace with her son, Michael D'Annunzio, Jr.; brother, Nicholas Paglia, Jr.; and parents, Nick and Virginia Paglia.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, July 19, at Our Lady of Las Vegas Catholic Church, 3050 Alta Drive, Las Vegas, NV 89107. Condolences may be sent to her son at [email protected], and to her sister at [email protected].
