Birth: unknown
Death: Mar. 23, 1865

Civil War Confederate Soldier. This young man was the son of General William Joseph Hardee. The four-year conflict was all but over when the young southern compatriot was felled at Bentonville, North Carolina on March 20, 1865. After pleading, his father permitted him to join the fighting as a member of the 8th Texas Cavalry. He died three days after the engagement of his battle wound. Legend holds that Union General O.O. Howard, a comrade of his fathers in the Old Army, sent condolences through the lines upon hearing of his untimely death. Willie was a student in Howard's Sunday school class while the senior Hardee was stationed at the United States Military Academy at West Point.

Note: Additional sources have his age at 16-years at the time of his death. His marker is inscribed "Aged 17".
