James "Tex" Carleton

Major League Baseball Player. The right-handed pitcher compiled a 100-76 record with a 3.91 earned run average for eight years in the major leagues. He pitched for the St. Louis Cardinals in 1932-34, going 10-13, 17-11 and 16-11. He was traded to the Chicago Cubs on November 21, 1934 for Bud Tinning, Dick Ward and cash. He compiled records of 11-8, 14-10, 16-8 and 10-9 with the Windy City team. Carleton pitched in three World Series. While with St. Louis, he was chased in the third inning of Game 4 in 1934 against Detroit but didn't take the loss. The following year with the Cubs he was the losing pitcher in Game 4, when he surrendered six hits in seven innings in a 2-1 loss. In 1938 against New York, he gave up one hit and two runs without retiring a batter in Game 4 as the Yankees, with such stars as Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Bill Dickey and Red Ruffing, posted a four-game sweep. He finished his career with Brooklyn in 1940. going 6-6.  (bio by: Ron Coons)
