The daughter of Ewing McDonald Jennings and Hilda Cook, Ethel married Fern Childers on 17 Jul 1926 in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois. They were the parents of 3 children.

Ethel and Fern lived in Bethalto, Madison County, Illinois. He was a farmer until his retirement.

1990 was a difficult year for the family. A daughter, Norma Jean Tappy, died following a long illness on the 17th of March. Less than 2 months later, Ethel's husband, Fern, passed away on May 7th after a lengthy illness.

Ethel lived until 1995. She died at the home of her daughter, Marilyn Smith, 5 days before what would have been her 91st birthday.

She was survived by 2 daughters and 3 sons-in-law, Janet and Jack Williams of Rosewood Heights, Illinois, Marilyn and Harry L. Smith of Greenville, Illinois, and George Tappy of Alton, Illinois; 8 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; and 2 sisters and 1 brother-in-law, Stella Fillenwarth of Mansfield, Illinois, and Ruth and Kenneth Bateman of Granger, Indiana.

In addition to her husband and 1 daughter, Ethel was preceded in death by her parents; 2 sisters; and several half-brothers and half-sisters.

Visitation was held on 14 Jul 1995 at Paynic Home for Funerals in Rosewood Heights, Illinois. Funeral services were conducted there at 11 a.m. the following morning.

The family requested that memorials, if desired, be made to St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Rosewood Heights.
