Born about 1840 in Pennsylvania.

Enlisted as a Private with Company C (the "Sunbury Guards") of the 47th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers on 2 September 1861. Mustered out at the expiration of his term on 18 September 1864. (Note: His Pennsylvania Veteran's Burial Index Card indicates he also a member of Company F of the 11th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, signifying that he was one the early defenders who enlisted for Three Months' service in response to President Lincoln's call following the fall of Fort Sumter.)

Major Engagements of the 47th Pennsylvania During His Term of Service: Defense of the nation's capital (Fall 1861); defense of Florida and southern areas (1862); Battle of Pocotaligo, South Carolina (October 1862); defense of Florida via garrisoning at Forts Taylor and Jefferson (1863); participated in Union General Nathaniel Banks' Red River Campaign across Louisiana (March-May 1864), including the Battles of Sabine Crossroads and Pleasant Hill.

AFTER THE WAR

After the war, he returned home and married Rebecca Bancus, a Pennsylvania native who was born sometime around 1844. In 1870, Charles and Rebecca were living and working in Sunbury, Northumberland County with their children: Levi (born about 1867) and Mary Jane. Born in Sunbury on 16 October 1869, Mary Jane would later wed John Pressler, and reside in Perry County where she passed away on 30 June 1934. (She and her husband are interred at the Duncannon Cemetery there.)

By 1880, Charles Harp was working as a Laborer and living with his wife and children in Sunbury. Following the birth of Levi and Mary were: Emma E. (born about 1872), Ellen Rebecca (who went by Rebecca and was born 13 March 1875), Susan Ida Harp (born about 1877), and Charles Harp (just 3 months old when the 1880 Census was taken). Rebecca would later wed a man with the surname of Forney and move to Duncannon in Perry County, where she passed away on 12 July 1917.

By 1890, the U.S. Veterans Schedule indicates that Rebecca Harp was a widow living in Halifax, Dauphin County. Pennsylvania Lutheran Church records indicate that Charles died in Northumberland County of dropsy on 9 August 1887, and was interred at the "Lower Cemetery" there. He was 48 years, 7 months, and 15 days old.
