Samuel served in the Civil War enlisting in Mansfield, Richland, Ohio, on 23 Aug 1862 and served for the following three years. He was discharged in Ohio on 26 Jun 1865.
He most likely moved to Miami County, Indiana in about 1867 where at least two of his brothers also lived. His pension papers list him as being 6 feet tall, dark complexion and dark hair with grey eyes. It listed his occupation as a farmer.
