US Congressman. Born in New Lisbon, Ohio, he move with his parents to Indiana and settled on a farm near Fort Wayne. He graduated from Ascension Seminary in 1874, later from the Terre Haute Commercial College, taught school and served as superintendent of schools for Allen County, Indiana. He graduated from the law school of Cincinnati University in 1882, was admitted to the bar in 1883 and commenced to practice law in Sullivan, Indiana. He was a member of the Indiana State central committee from the second district (1884-85) and appointed by President Harrison, assistant to the Attorney General in the Department of Justice, serving (1889-93). In 1905, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-ninth and Sixtieth Congresses, serving until 1909. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he continued the practice of law until his death at age 87 in Sullivan, Indiana.
