Her given name was Mary with "Polly" being the nickname. She is listed as "Polly P. Nichols" in her father's will and as "Mary (Hughes) Nichols" in her grandson's book, "Proof of Pudding: Autobiography of John Harmon Nichols." It is estimated she was born around 1790, probably in Virginia.

Mary "Polly" Hughes and Bird Nichols were married around 1812-1813, based on the birth date (5 Dec 1813) of their first child, Bird M. Nichols.

Polly's parents were Simon Hughes (born c1740 Virginia, died c Dec 1823 per Smith County, Tennessee, Probate records) and Martha "Patty" Biggers Douglas. Martha's first husband was Robert Douglas, whom she m 1772 in Louisa County, Virginia. He d Jan 1781.

It is not known where Polly is buried. After she died (c 1835) Bird moved in 1838 from Smith County, Tennessee, to Marion County, Illinois--the general area where some of his brothers and sisters and their families had lived since the early 1810s. He died in 1844 in Illinois and is buried there, probably in Magassi Cemetery, Fayette County, Illinois. They are my third great-grandparents. ~~ Resa Nichols Hennings
