John the son of Edward R. Thotland and Lillian K. Thotland of South Minnetonka Minnesota enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps on October 18 1965 in Minneapolis MN. He arrived in Vietnam on February 27 1967 where he was assigned for duty and served with HMM-262, MAG-36, 1st Marine Air Wing, FMFPac.

On February 28, a CH-46D from HMM-262 was on route from Dong Ha to Khe Sanh in Hoa Huong District of northern Quang Tri Province. The aircraft was on a mission to bring a repair crew for a damaged CH-46D when it was hit with automatic weapons fire in the vicinity of the border of Cam Lo and Hoa Huong Districts. The CH-46D caught fire, crashed and burned on impact, recovery crews located one survivor who later died at the 3d Medical Battalion in Quang Tri. Twenty three passengers and crew were killed on the ill-fated flight; one of the casualties was LCpl Thotland.
