Thomas Funeral Held Thursday

Funeral for Mrs. Clara K. Thomas, 822 Colorado Ave., was held at 10 AM Thursday May 8, at Peacock-Frye Almont chapel. Officiating was the Rev. John Hammons, Pastor first Christian Church.

Casket bearers were nephews, Edwin Kiefer, Willis Kiefer, Kurt Huebert, Frank Terry, Wayne Kiefer. Honorary casket bearer was John Weesner.

Burial was in Fairview Cemetery.

Mrs. Thomas died May 5, 1980, at St. Mary-Corwin Hospital in Pueblo. She had been hospitalized in Pueblo since April 26. Mrs. Thomas had suffered second and third degree burns over both legs, both arms, neck and face in a fire at her home the morning of April 26.

She was born Dec. 6, 1897, in Newkirk, Oklahoma and had lived in Newkirk until she was 20 years old. She took nurses training in Halstead, Kansas. Mrs. Thomas was superintendent of the Lyons County Hospital for 10 years.

Moving to La Junta in 1933, she and her first husband, the late Frank Frey, came during the construction of the Kit Carson Hotel. They jointly managed the hotel until 1942 when Mr. Frey died. She continued as manager of the hotel until 1958 when she sold the business to Frank Sutton. In 1958, she married Clyde Thomas and the couple built their home at 822 Colorado Ave. He preceded her in death in 1966.

Survivors include one brother and sister-in-law, Orval and Cora Kiefer, Rialto, Calif.; a sister-in-law Hazel Kiefer, Junction City, Kansas; six nieces and nephews, including Mrs. Leota Huebert, Halstead, Kansas; several great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one brother.

Persons wishing to do so may make memorial contributions to the Cancer Care Clinic at La Junta Medical Center or to the Koshare Kiva.
