William Hahn was born about 1799, the son of Peter Hahn and his wife, Ann Eve Smith Hahn. His father Peter was a butcher in Baltimore City, so it is likely that William apprenticed in this trade.

On Dec 21, 1820, William Hahn married Susan Gough, daughter of Harry Gough and his wife Martha Onion Gough. Both were living in Baltimore City at the time of their marriage. (The American & Commercial Daily Adver, 23 Dec 1820).

In January 1824, William and Susan were renting a house from Basil D. Mullikin & Eliza McElderry Mullikin. The property, located north and east of Bayard Street for $27.50 yearly rent. (WG-170-143)--Mdlandrec

On Sep 8, 1830, William Hahn bought a lot on the north side of Bayard Street, Baltimore City, from H.D. Gough (his brother-in-law) for $133. (WG-207-153)

The 1830 census lists him as "William Horn": 1 male, 1 female 30-39 yrs (Wm & Susan); 2 females 5-9 yrs (daughters Elizabeth & Mary Ann); 1 male under 5 yrs (Harry Gough Hahn)

Matchett's 1835-1836 Baltimore Directory lists William Hahn, victualler, living at 124 Mullikin Street, east of Bond. In 1837 he is at the same residence, but listed as a butcher.

1840 Federal Census, the Wm Hahn family was living at 124 Mullikin St, Ward 3. Wm & Susan lived with their first 7 children: Elizabeth 18, Mary Ann 15, Harry 13, Wm 10, Susan 8, Anna 5, Edward 2. George was born the next year.
