BARBARA NICHOLS HOLZAPFEL, 86, of Hagerstown, died Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2003, at Washington County Hospital. Born in Rutland, Vt., on July 3, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Ernest H. and Eula Anson Nichols. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Norman McClave Holzapfel.

She had been employed as a Realtor by Strole Realty Co., Hagerstown. She was a member of The Presbyterian Church of Hagerstown. Barbara was a 1935 graduate of Hagerstown High School. She attended Dension University, Granville, Ohio, where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, graduating in 1939. She later received a graduate degree from Simmons College, Boston, Mass. She was a member of the Women's Club, Town & Country Garden Club and Fountain Head Country Club. She had been active in the Potomac Playmakers.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her daughter, Marjorie H. Long, and her son, James N. Holzapfel, both of Hagerstown; two brothers, Thomas H. Nichols of Atlanta, Ga., and David Nichols of Silverstreet, S.C.; and six grandchildren; and many dearly loved nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert H. Nichols, Philip C. Nichols and Richard A. Nichols.

A memorial service was held at the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, Hagerstown; interment was held privately by the family at Rose Hill Cemetery.
