Otilla was born in Germany the daughter of Charles Schmidt and Utilia Bruah. They arrived from Germany to Philadelphia in 1747. Listed together on that ship was: Carl Schmidt (father) Utilia Bruah (mother) John Adam (son) & Otilla (daughter.) Otillia was the second wife of Jacob Shaffer, they married 31 May 1767, Maxatawny Township, Berks, PA. Jacob Shaffer was listed as a widower. In Otilla's obituary it is stated that she was born in Europe on 29th of Sept 1744, and that she had 7 sons and 5 daughters,,all who were living except 3 sons and 2 daughters. She was married to Jacob Shaffer and was widowed for 16 years and 4 months. She had 77 grandchildren. She was sick 14 days ago on ulcer in the stomach at the age of 87 years and 12 days old. Funeral Text Luke 2,29 and 30, Pastor Ambrosius Henkel Oct 13, 1831 (as stated in The Sheffer Family of Shenandoah Co, Va Nov 30, 1944 by Chas. Loeber, pg 44) Her children with Jacob in birth order were, Hannah, George, Barbara, Henrich, Elizabeth Rebecca, Philip, Abraham, Jonas, and Solomon, and others not mentioned with no records.

The children's birth order can be found at the Virginia State Library Chancery records Shaffer vs. Philip Shaffer #1867-006. The book "200 Years in the Shenandoah Valley" by Arthur Pierson Kelley shows records of the Rev.Paul Henkel and baptism's for some of Jacob's children and his family -Old Pine Church-Mt Jackson, VA. She may have been buried with her husband Jacob Shaffer at Old Pine Cemetery, others have them buried at Solomen's Cemetery, no records found
