CLAYTON ALBERT HAYES JR., "Bud," of Hagerstown, passed away at the home of his son, Clayton, on Monday, Aug. 6, 2012. Bud was born in Hagerstown on Sept. 24, 1921, the son of Clayton A. Hayes and Lillian Eastella Sanbower Hayes.

He was a graduate of Hagerstown High School, class of 1939. Bud served in the U.S. Air Corps as a staff sergeant during World War II, stationed in the Aleutian Islands. He retired from the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Martinsburg, W.Va. During his retirement, Bud became an avid and accomplished photographer, winning numerous awards for entries in the Cumberland Valley Photographic Salon. He was an active member of the Elks Club, the Northern Avenue American Legion, the Funkstown American Legion and Izaak Walton League in West Virginia.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Hazel Poole Hayes; and a brother, Jack Hayes.

Clayton is survived by his second wife, Nadine Hayes of Hagerstown; a brother, Donald Hayes, Hagerstown; his sister, Gladys Triesler; two sons, Clayton Albert Hayes III, Hagerstown, and Larry Allen Hayes, Wayensboro, Pa.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Burial was at the convenience of the family.; arrangements were handled by the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home.

CLAYTON A. HAYS SR., 78, 141 Devonshire Rd., died Tuesday at the Longwood Medical Center in Florida. He was born in Bedington, WV. He was a member of the Trinity United Brethren Church. He retired from Fairchild Corp. in 1961.

He is survived by his wife, Vera Hays; four sons, Clayton A. Hays, Jr., and Jack E. Hays, both of Hagerstown; Donald L. Hays, Williamsport; and Robert M. Smith, Georgia; daughter, Mrs. J. Triesler, Woodbine, Md.; two brothers, James Hays, West Virginia; and Howard Hays, Virginia; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Services were held at the Minnich Funeral Home. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery.
