Mary Bernardine Kane Adams
Birth: Jul. 2, 1901
Silver Bow County
Montana, USA
Death: Apr. 23, 1972
Los Angeles
Los Angeles County
California, USA

Mary Bernardine Kane, daughter of Patrick Henry and Mary [Maloney] Kane of Waseca Co., Minnesota was born in Butte, Montana. The family continued west to San Francisco when Bernardine was very young. The great earthquake and fire of San Francisco hit in 1906, while they were there. Bernardine remembered scary nights in make-shift tent cities in San Francisco cemeteries during that time. In 1918, her mother succumbed to the Spanish Influenza in San Francisco. Shortly after her death, the family moved to Portland, Oregon where Bernardine met and married John T. (Jack) Driscoll, a young district attorney for the county of Multnomah. They had two sons before moving to Los Angeles in 1923. A third son was born in 1926. Two years later, she was left a widow when Jack succumbed to bacterial endocarditis, an infection which today is easily cured with antibiotics. The stock market crashed the following year and Bernardine took in laundry to make ends meet. In the summer of 1936, she married Thomas Edward (Tommy) Adams, whom her sons greatly loved. In 1945, her middle son, Richard Kane Driscoll tragically died in a car accident while attending Stanford University. Three years later, Tommy died. She remained a widow until her death in 1972. During those later years she enjoyed many friendships and her family.
