William Hawkins Polk

US Congressman. Born in Maury County, Tennessee, he was the brother of US President James Knox Polk. After attending University of North Carolina (1832-33), he graduated from the University of Tennessee, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1839 and commenced to practice law in Columbia, Tennessee. He was a member of the Tennessee State House of Representatives (1842-45), Ambassador to the Kingdom of Naples (1845-47) and served as a Major in the 3rd Regiment Dragoons, US Army, in the Mexican American War, (1847-48). In 1851, he was elected as an Independent Democrat to the Thirty-second Congress, serving until 1853. After his term, he resumed the practice of law and died of a sudden illness at age 47. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
