Charles was an actor with 133 movie credits to his name. His first role was in 1912 (How States are Made), his last in 1943 (It Ain't Hay). He both acted in and directed Tillie's Punctured Romance. His career, while robust in the teens, dropped off precipitously later, finding him in mostly uncredited roles in rather major films (Citizen Kane, Mrs. Miniver, and Gunga Din, for example). Charles was married to Boots Mallory (they divorced)*, and later to Dorothy Eileen Brown Bennett, who survived him. He was also survived by a son, Charles M., who was a flight officer in the glider corps, and two brothers, Arthur (of Australia) and Norman, who worked for RKO Studios.

Please note that there is reason to believe that the Charles Bennett married to Boots Mallory may not have been THIS Charles Bennett, who appears to have married Dorothy Eileen Brown Bennett young (age 23), first, and only.
