Richard the son of Daniel L. Cheney and Evelyn E. Cheney of Dorchester MA enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps on April 25 1968 in Boston MA. He arrived in Vietnam on January 14 1969 where he was assigned to and served with Company A, 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

During the month of May the Battalion continued operations in the Duy Xuyen and Duc Duc Districts of Quang Nam Province. On May 9 in the vicinity of the My Hiep village complex northwest of Liberty Bridge Company A made contact with a large force of NVA. Air strikes were called on the enemy in fortified postings before the Marines assaulted the enemy forcing them to flee. During the fire fights four men were killed in action and several were wounded. PFC Cheney was one of the casualties, he was killed from hostile small arms fire and second degree burns.
