The first of twelve children, William Hanson grew up helping his father in the Berwick Ship Yard. He married Dorothy Laustaunau, daughter of a French immigrant, on June 18, 1885. He became a ship carpenter, later a marine captain, and completed his career with the Gulf Oil Refinery in Texas. He was the father of eight children.

His obituary from the Pt. Arthur newspaper reads: "Presbyterian services conducted in Pt. Arthur. Other religious and funeral services conducted from Hanson residence in Berwick, LA, Monday, July 10th, 1944 at 4 pm. Interment in Berwick Cemetery. Charter member of the Woodmen of the World and the Knights of Pythias in Berwick. 19 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren."
