John was most like born in Eppstein, Germany about the time his father immigrated to America, or soon after in Pennsylvania. It is unlikely a birth record will be found since his father was a Mennonite. John was married to Catharine "Caty" and had five children, John Jr. (no information on the location of John Jr.), Jacob A., Elizabeth wife of Jacob Boblet Jr. & Henry Houser, Abraham and Catherine wife of John King. John & Caty moved from Shenandoah County to Rockingham County in 1808 and by 1814 the family migrated west to Preble County Ohio. It is believed that Caty died in Virginia or shortly after arriving in Ohio. John Hershberger married a second time to Hanna Holms/Holmes on 21 Dec 1826.

John is most likely buried on or near his hundred acres farm located in the north part of the Southwest quarter of section number one of Township number five of range No., three East of the Meridian line drawn from the mouth of the great Miami River and lets it be more or less as much as lays in said quarter excepting Jacob Boblet's survey. It is very possible John was buried at Eby Cemetery where his daughter Catherine King's tombstone was recently found. John Hershberger died between 1 February 1832 and 16 March 1833.
