Mary Jane McAllister, born in 1825, left Missouri in spring of 1852. She and her husband, John Wesley McAllister, and their three children, Joseph, Hiram, and Emily, traveled west by ox-drawn wagon. They arrived in Washington Territory in November of 1852 and sent a letter to John's cousin, James McAllister, asking him to come meet them and guide them over the Cowlitz Trail. They eventually settled into their 320 acre donation claim on the Thurston County side of the Nisqually River, just east of cousin James' donation claim of 640 acres. John Wesley McAllister signed as a witness to the Medicine Creek Treaty in December, 1854. His cousin, James McAllister, was killed the following year at the inception of the Indian War. John Wesley and Mary Jane McAllister had 6 chilren after their arrival in Washington Territory: John, George, James, Emma, William, and Mary.
Mary Jane's maiden name was Thomas. She was born in Virginia. Her husband, John Wesley McAllister, was born in Greenup County, Kentucky. He died in 1873 and Mary Jane married Philander Washburn and moved to Gate, Washington. There she died in 1887.
