Bellingham Herald, The (WA) April 15, 2004
Vilas Markham, 96, a forty-five year resident of Bellingham, has died in Auburn, California. She was born in Spokane and graduated from Lewis and Clark High School there and Washington State (College) in Pullman. A highlight of her childhood was two years in Hawaii during World War I where her father was stationed in the Army. The family moved to Seattle in the thirties and built a house she designed. She joined the Seattle Mountaineers and hiked and climbed in mountains all over the West.

She met her husband, Aaron, in the Mountaineers, and they were married in 1941. After two years in York, PA, where their first daughter was born, they returned to Seattle and had their second daughter. In 1952 the family moved to Bellingham, living on Lake Whatcom's north shore for 34 years. She was active in the Silver Beach Community Church for many years. Her faith was very important to her, and she and her husband made several trips to the Holy Land.

After her husband died in 1986, she cared for her mother until she was 100 years old. During her last eight years in Bellingham, she lived at the Willows Retirement Community, where she took voice lessons. After her stroke in 1997 she moved to California to live with her daughter. All her life she enjoyed needlework, gardening, reading, music and keeping up with her extended family. Unable to read music after her stroke, she focused on playing music by ear, a gift she had all her life. She was cheerful and positive and enjoyed playing the piano in the nursing home until recently.

She is survived by her two daughters and their husbands, Claire and George Scranton of Seattle and Jennifer and Robert Owens of Auburn, CA. Her grandchildren are Rachel Schoonmaker and husband Kevin of Wheaton, IL, Daniel Owens and wife Heather, serving as missionaries in SE Asia, Trever Scranton and wife Ann of Seattle, and Lindsey Scranton of Seattle. She has a great-grandson, David Schoonmaker, in Illinois, age 2.

There will be a memorial service in Seattle at the Scranton home Saturday, April 17th at 11am. A graveside service will be held at 1 pm, April 19th at Greenacres Memorial Park, 5700 Northwest Road, Ferndale, with coffee to follow.
