Roy Cyrus Durmire, of Hiddenite, went home to meet his Lord and Savior that he served his whole life Friday, May 30, 2014. He was born February 24, 1939 to the late Buford Washington and Emma Lea Sharpe Durmire. He was 75 years old. He graduated from Hiddenite High School in 1957. Roy worked at Hedrick Manufacturing Co. in Statesville and worked on the family farm with his dad. He served 2 years in the US Army. Roy was a dairy and poultry farmer and he also had beef cows and goats. He loved working with all of his animals and building fences for them. Also, he loved his church and preachers. Roy was the Sunday School superintendent for 40 years, a deacon, sang in the choir, lead the Happy Voice Choir, was always helping out the church people and he was loved by all. Along with his parents, Roy was preceded in death by sister-in-law: Kay Durmire. He is survived by his wife, Ellen Johnson Durmire, of 51 years. A daughter, Tammy Durmire Lancaster and husband Rev. John Lancaster. A son, Roy Dewayne Durmire. 9 grandchildren: John Carl and wife Hallie, Rev. Nathanael, Isaac and Jesse Lancaster of Waterloo, SC, Megan and Matthew McLain, Dalton and Devin Durmire, and mother Phyllis Durmire, all of Hiddenite, NC; two brothers, Jerry Durmire and Frank Durmire and wife Denise; sister, Wilma Durmire Sprinkle and husband Doug, all of Hiddenite. He also has a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, June 4, 2014 from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm at Sulphur Springs Baptist Church. The service will be held on Thursday, June 5, 2014 at 3:00 pm at Sulphur Springs Baptist Church with the Rev. Steve Parks, Mitch King, Dr. John Lancaster, and Rev. Nathanael Lancaster officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. Pallbearers include John Carl Lancaster, Nathanael Lancaster, Isaac Lancaster, Matthew McLain, Dalton Durmire, Jesse Lancaster, and Devin Durmire. Honorary Preachers include: Eddie Honeycutt, Marcus Benfield, Chris Benfield, Dean Shepherd, Andy Carrigan, Don McIntire, Stuart White, James Lockee, Ray Raymer, Perry Link, Charles Cook, and Henry Cook.
