Mrs. L.A. Lowther Dies

Wife of Superintendent of Schools Had Lived Here Since 1897

Mrs. L.A. Lowther died Sunday evening at 8:45 o'clock at her home, 617 Exchange, after an illness of about three weeks. Mrs. Lowther had been in failing health for 2 years, but was not confined to bed until about three weeks ago.

Mrs. Lowther, whose maiden name was Retta Thistle, was one of five [six] children born to James and Mary Ellen Soper Thistle in West Virginia. She was born November 14, 1860 on a farm near New Martinsville, West Va. She was married December 29, 1886 to Lloyd A. Lowther, in Sistersville, Tyler County, West Virginia. Immediately after their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Lowther came to Cottonwood Falls, where Mr. Lowther was superintendent of schools. They moved to Emporia in 1897.

Mrs. Lowther was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and had taken an active interest in church work, missionary and aid societies, throughout the years she had lived in Emporia. She was a charter member of the Review Club.

She is survived by Mr. Lowther; a daughter, Miss Kathleen Lowther, who teaches in the high school in Oklahoma City, Okla., and a son, Eugene T. Lowther, of The Gazette. She also is survived by one grandson, James Eugene Lowther, and three sisters: Mrs. Julia McCoy, Sistersville, W.Va., Miss Sue Thistle, New York City, and Mrs. Ida M. West, Brooklyn, N.Y.; and one sister-in-law, Mrs. Sylvania Thistle, Sistersville.

Services at Presbyterian Church

Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock at the First Presbyterian Church. Rev. W.S. Dando, pastor of the church, will conduct the services. The casket will be open this evening and Tuesday until 3 o'clock at the Sutton Funeral home. Interment will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery.

Funeral services for Mrs. L.A. Lowther, who died Sunday evening, were held Tuesday afternoon in the First Presbyterian Church. Rev. W.S. Dando, pastor of the church, conducted the services. A quartet composed of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Bender and Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Owen sang, accompanied by Daniel A. Hirschler. Pallbearers were F.B. Heath, J.T. Adams, F.E. Pennington, E.W. Daniels and O.G. Rindom, members of the Board of Education, and Rice E. Brown, Principal of the Senior High School. The teachers of the city schools attended the services in a group, as did the members of the Review Club. Interment was in Memorial Lawn Cemetery.

Word was received Monday by relatives that Mrs. L. A. Lowther, wife of Prof. L. A. Lowther, superintendent of schools of Emporia, Kansas, had passed away at her home in that city. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. James Thistle, pioneer residents of Sistersville, and spent her childhood in Sistersville and has many relatives and friends in the country.

She is survived by her husband, one son, Eugene T. Lowther, advertising manager of the Emporia Gazette and Miss Kathleen Lowther, teacher in the Junior high school of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Prof. Lowther is the brother of Squire A. G. Lowther.
