Martha Lucille Vowels, 96, of Owensboro passed away on Saturday, May 24, 2014, in Owensboro. She was born on May 12, 1918, in West Louisville, Kentucky to the late William G. and Florean Stallings Blandford. Martha was a housewife and a homemaker.

She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Elizabeth Munday Senior Citizens Center senior group, Altar Society, and Legion of Mary ministry and praise. She enjoyed quilting, sewing, hemming, gardening and playing cards with her friends, but most of all she loved spending time with her grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by her husband, Troy Herbert Vowels in 1984; a son, Martin Vowels; a daughter, Mary Vowels; two grandsons, Bradley and David Vowels; a granddaughter, Nancy Johnson; a brother, William J. Blandford; and a sister, Edwinna Johnson.

She is survived by three sons, Hubert Lee (Christine) Vowels of Owensboro, William Troy (Barbara) Vowels of Masonville, and James F. (Patty) Vowels of Pleasant Ridge; five daughters, Joanna (Billy) Hatcher of Owensboro, Martha Loueva (Ernie) Davis of Philpot, Edith Jane (Jack) Murphy of Owensboro, Margaret (David) Wingfield of Owensboro, and Deborah Vowels of Owensboro, 28 grandchildren; 59 great-grandchildren; 21 great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Walter Blandford of Lowell, Ind.; four sisters, Edith Conkright , Leona Prewitt and Marie Thompson all of Owensboro, and Emogene (Frank) Alvey of Louisville; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be at noon Wednesday at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church with the Rev. Brad Whistle officiating. Burial to follow in St. Raphael Cemetery in West Louisville, Kentucky. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Haley-McGinnis & Owensboro Funeral Home and after 11 a.m. on Wednesday at the church. Prayers will be said 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
