The progenitor of our branch of the Poling family was Thomas Poland who landed from the ship Scorpion at Lynn, Massachusetts, in 1642. He came from Gloucester County, England. He left his wife and at least three sons and a daughter in England to be brought over after he had established himself. His sons were James, John, Joseph and possibly, William. Another abstract-same book: The Polings who survived the Norman conquest became vassels to the Norman, Roger de Montgomeri, to whom William the Conqueror, among many othe gifts, gave the Hundred of Poling, the Hundred of Angerming, and five other Hundreds to the Rape of Arundel. 'History of Barbour County', 1979, page 333, lists a biographical sketch of Daniel Boyles POLING which mentions ancestor Thomas POLAND who came to Lynn, Massachusetts in 1642 from Gloucester County, England..

Tatterson, p 1, says Thomas POLAND landed from the ship "Scorpion" at Lynn, Massachusetts, in 1642. He came from Gloucester County, England. He then left with Lady Deborah MOODY due to religious persecution and settled in New Amsterdam at Gravesend..

"The Polands from Essex County, Mass.", by L O Poland, p 37, says "Per the Clermont Courier of Batavia, Ohio, newspaper, issue of 7 Apr 1886, 'In 1642, Thomas POLAND arrived in Lynn, Mass., on the good ship, Scorpion, from
Worcestershire Co., England, where his ancestors were well-to-do farmers back to the days of the Norman Conquest in 1066.'" Page 11 says "he was a stern Puritan and left four sons.".
