Longtime teacher, coach Greg Mattison dies at 43

Greg Mattison 43, longtime local teacher, coachand 4-H adviser, died Tuesday. He was the first student to graduate from Quartz Hill High School and return there as a teacher. He was born April 25 1951 in
Warren, Pa. His family moved to Lancaster when he was 6 month old. He attended Sierra and Sacred Heart schools prior to moving to Bakersfield when he was ten. Mr. Mattison returned to Lancaster when he was 16 and went to Quartz Hill High, where he played offensive guard on the varsity football team and also was involved with track, wrestling and Pony League. He attended Antelope Valley College and then was graduated from La Verne College with a master's degree in administrative education. During his college years he worked with the L.A. County Probation Department. He was wed to Marlene Llarena 20 years ago. The couple served as house parents to eight children from the Masonic Home for two years. Mr. Mattison worked at Wccidental College, Royal Oaks, Quartz Hill High and Antelope Valley College in coaching and teaching. Most recently he had been coaching at Highland High School.
In addition to formal coaching duties, where he picked up the nickname "Mad Dog" he supported soccer, Little League and wrestling activities.
He had coached Quartz Hill High wrestling for the past four years. Survivors include his wife Marlene; sons Mikel and Weslee and daughter Merah. Other survivors include his mother Jo Mattison of Lancaster brothers, Frank Mattison and family; Dan Mattison and family; sister Linda Kiely and family; Mary Woodward and family; and Jen Pattison. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday March 17 at the First Assembly of God in Lancaster at 44514 20th St W Viewing will be 6 to 8 Thursday at Halley-Olsen Funeral Chapel.
