Major John Adams Avera was the son of William Chester Avera and Fluerette Jeanne Leigh. Major Avera's tour of duty began on January 7, 1970. Major Avera was assigned to Advisory Team 26, Headquarters, Military Assistance Command, Vietnam. Major Avera died from injuries received while in base camp when mortar fire directed at a hostile force landed in the area. Major Avera was married and the father of two sons. Major Avera's name is engraved on Panel 12W, Line 113 of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
