James Lewis Howell, 93, of North Little Rock, departed this life on November 25, 2021. He was born December 5, 1927 to James Bryan and Virginia Belle Lewis Howell.

He started working at age 10, hoeing roses at Vestal Nursery. A few years later he worked the soda fountain at Argenta Drug and while in high school started repairing the switchboard connectors wiring at Southwestern Bell in Little Rock. Jim graduated from North Little Rock High School in 1946 and served in the Marine Corp from 1946 to 1950. He retired as a technician from Southwestern Bell/AT&T in 1986. Deciding he retired too young, Jim worked for Roller Funeral Homes from 1988 to 1998.

Jim was a faithful member of Park Hill Baptist Church, North Little Rock, and was ordained a Deacon in 1988. He belonged to the Boy Scouts of America, Order of DeMolay, Communication Workers of America, was Past President of the Park Hill Lions Club and a member of the AT&T Wheelchair Ramp Building Team. He held a Second-Class Radio Operator's License and a Private Pilot License. Jim's flying instructor was Milton Crenchaw of the Tuskegee Airmen. However, Tanna convinced him crop dusting was not in his future.

Jim and Tanna enjoyed many road trips to scenic locations in the eastern and southern United States. Jim spent many hours in his shop in the backyard; woodworking, making walking sticks and canes, and wooden toys for children in the family. He loved fly-fishing, deer hunting, and just being in the outdoors. Any time shared with family was precious to him.

For the past six years, Mount Carmel Assisted Living Community in Benton has been Jim's home. Those years were filled with caring support, good food, and many activities. But more than that, there was fun, fellowship, respect and love. He loved living there. Our family wants to thank everyone at Mount Carmel for providing such a wonderful place for our "Pops".

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Virginia Belle and James B Howell; his wife, Tanna Murry Howell; and son, James R. Howell. He is survived by his grandsons, Douglas Howell (Whitney), and David Howell of Bryant; daughter "of choice", Cammy Ferguson (Cleve) of Benton; Sister, Virginia Spence; brother-in-law, Rucker Murry (Wilma) of Prescott; and many extended family members.

Visitation will be Friday, December 3rd from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Smith North Little Rock Funeral Home. The funeral service, officiated by Rev. Ken Shaddox, will be Saturday, December 4th at 1:00 p.m. in the sanctuary of Park Hill Baptist Church, 201 East C Street, North Little Rock. An informal entombment will be Tuesday, December 7th at 11:00 a.m. at Pinecrest Memorial Park Mausoleum, Alexander.
