Born in Canton, China, at the age of ten Joseph was sold by his father for $6 to Amos Peck, an American sea captain. While he was technically a slave, he grew up as a member of the Peck household. One of the few Chinese to serve in the Civil War, Joseph enlisted on July 26, 1862. At that time he gave his occupation as farmer. He later worked as an engraver for the Meriden Britannia Company for 26 years before retiring in 1914.
Joseph settled in Meriden in 1868 and remained there until his death. On Nov. 12, 1876 he married Martha Morgan of Portland, Ct. They had four children, Lulu Edna, Edna Berta, Franklin Norris, and Howard Benjamin.
