MRS. AUGUSTA C. SHANKLIN
Augusta Catherine Eyman was born June 11th, 1859. in Adair County, Mo., the daughter of George and Sarah (Taylors Eyman, and passed away at Concordia, Kas.. April 10th, 1957. at the age of 97 years, 9 months and 29 days,
She moved, with her parents, when a small child, to Adams County, III., living there with her widowed mother, her father having died in the Civil War. She was the last of her family.
She was converted and joined the First Baptist Church at Clayton, III., at. the age of 16 years, In 1887 she Joined her mother and brothers who were homesteading land in Kearney County in western Kansas, where she, too, homesteaded a claim, experiencing all the rigors of pioneer life.
On October 18th, 1890, she was married to the Rev. Perry G. Shanklin and to this union were born two sons. Herbert E. Shanklin, now of Kansas City, Mo.; and Harold H. Shanklin, now deceased; three daughters, Vernon S. Gutridge, DeQueen, Ark.; Vida. S. Bronson, Washington, Kns., and Berniece Shanklin, Los Angeles. Calif., all of whom, except Harold, survive her. She also mothered two step- sons, Carey R. Shanklin and Ralph B. Shanklin, both deceased, and a stepdaughter, Amelia E. Martin, Iola, Kas.
They settled to Garden City, Kas., where for seven years he, with her help. did pastoral and district missionary work. He was pastor of the Baptist Church at Garden City and, later. at Burden, Kas. In 1898, they moved to Ottawa, Kas.. joining. the First Baptist Church of which she was a faithful member until her death.
she was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Perry G. Shanklin on Feb. 5th, 1926; her youngest son, Harold Shanklin, March 1, 1953, and her two step-sons, Carey R. Shanklin on July 4th, 1944 and Ralph 13. Shanklin in August, 1952. On Dec. 23, 1952, after more than a half century of loving service to her family, her church and her community, she went to Concordia, Kas., to make her home at Sunset Home, where she remained until she quietly went to sleep April 10th, 1957, not to reawaken to earthly life.
Her entire life was spent in loving service to her family, friends and neighbors.
Left to mourn her passing are her one son, three daughters and one stepdaughter; fifteen grandchildren and twenty-seven great-grandchildren and a host of friends.
Funeral services were held at the Lamb Funeral Home in Ottawa Saturday afternoon, April 13th. with the Rev. Roger Fredrikson, pastor of the First Baptist Church officiating, assisted by , her former pastor, Dr. W. A. Elliott. Pallbearers were five grandsons. Frank H. Bronson, Royal S. Bronson, David K. Gutridge, Roy E. Gutridge and Charles H. Shanklin and a grandson-in-law, Kent Manchester. Interment was in Highland Cemetery, Ottawa, Kas.
