Burl J. Harris, 89, of the 3600 block of Karlin Ave., went to be with the Lord Nov. 13, 2005, surrounded by his loving family. Born May 29, 1916, to Mr. and Mrs. William S. Harris in Mount Gilead, N.C. Burl was always a hard worker who was employed as a carpenter with Conrad Brothers for 38 years. He was a member of the local United Brotherhood of Carpenters for over 45 years. Mr. Harris was a man of great faith; he was a deacon with Cornerstone Baptist Church and also taught Sunday school for many years. His family and friends will always remember him for his smile, always listening and being a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 49 years, Melrose Harris; four sons, John Smith (Janice) of Knott’s Island, N.C., Jim Smith (Fran) of Florida, Tom Smith (Esther) of Norfolk and Joe Smith (Trudy) of Oklahoma; two daughters, Annette Harris (Mike Kelly), and Janet Johnson, all of Suffolk; two brothers, Herbert Harris of Virginia Beach and Paul Harris of Florida; four grandchildren, Donald, Brian, and Jeffrey Smith and Tiffany Johnson; and great-grandchild, Arron Smith. The family would like to send a special thank you to all their neighbors and friends especially Kathryn Ogg, Ken Grow, Kevin Watson, Gladys Summerlin and Diane Lindsey. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel with a service to follow at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Fred Braswell officiating.
