Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He enlisted as a Private in the 12th New York State Militia at the outbreak of the Civil War. Later, he was commissioned as 1st Lieutenant and Adjutant of the 4th New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry before joining the staff of Brigadier General Adelbert Ames. He served as on of General Ames' Assistant Adjutant Generals, and rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel of Volunteers. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services during the war". After the end of the Civil War he became a prominent New York City Book publisher and Broker.
