Rosalie Carter D.D.S. was born in a house next door to the Carter House, the first child of Dr. Moscow Branch Carter, Jr. and his wife Lucy Goss Carter. She was believed to have been the first woman to graduate from the Vanderbilt School of Dentistry. She practiced dentistry with her father in his office on the Square in Franklin. After he retired, she enclosed the porch on their house on West Main Street and ran her practice there. In addition to being an active member of professional organizations, she was an avid genealogist and a member the N.S.D.A.R., U.D.C., Hugenot Society, and the Williamson County Historical Society. She wrote a biography of her great-uncle Theodrick "Tod" Carter and also wrote a pocket guide to the Carter House. She was a member of the National League of American Pen Women. She was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church (later known as the Historic Franklin Presbyterian Church). Her vivacious character made an impression on all who met her.
