Mellingertown was established by the family and is now part of Mt Pleasant. The Westmoreland and Fayette County Historical House and museum is located at West Overton (just outside of Mt Pleasant) contains much information on the Mellinger family

In 1839, Samuel Mellinger was a manufacturer of farm machinery. He and his family operated a foundry. There they made the iron picket fence that surrounded the private family cemetery, in the early 1800 period.
Legend tells us that Samuel was killed, in an accident, which perhaps split the family ties for many years, of a family which was closely knit.
His sons (except for Henry) served in the Civil War. After the War John must have been connected with the Foundry, as he embezzled money, which bankrupted the Foundry.

Samuel was also a circuit riding preacher. He and his family were Mennonites, belonging to the Mennonite Camp near Donegal, Pennsylvania.

"But when ye come, and all the flow'rs are dying
If I am dead, as dead I well may be
You'll come and find the place where I am lying
And kneel and say an Ave there for me.

And I shall hear, though soft you tread above me
And all my grave will warmer, sweeter be
For you will bend and tell me that you love me
And I shall sleep in peace until you come to me."
