The 30th Infantry Regiment completed its organization at Fredericksburg, Virginia, in June, 1861. Men of this unit were from Fredericksburg and the counties of Spotsylvania, Caroline, Stafford, and King George.
1st Lieut. John Walter Dabney, died 29 January 1862 in Fredericksburg of pneumonia. Gordon Rifles, 30th Va Regiment, 31st year of his age. Requested to be buried beside his deceased wife "who died but one short year ago".
