GALENA - Robert L. Scott, 83, of Galena, died at 1:50 a.m., Sunday, Dec. 25, 2005, at the Kansas Veterans Nursing Home, Winfield, following a long illness.

He was born Jan. 29, 1922, at Brayman, Okla., to John Lewis and Viola L. (Gwinup) Scott. He had lived in Galena most of his life.

Upon graduation from Galena High School, he worked for the Forrest Eckels Grocery Store until entering the U.S. Army in 1942. He served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater during World War II, and was discharged in1944.

He then began working at the Eagle Picher Smelter, Galena, where he retired in 1987 as the Maintenance Superintendent after 44 years of service. In the 1950s he also owned and operated Scott's Hardware Store in Galena.

He was member of Sixth Street Baptist Church, Galena, and had attended Tennessee Prairie Friends Church, Galena. He was a member of the Galena Masonic Lodge where he serve two terms as District Deputy and was three times the Master of the Lodge. He was a member of the Galena Fire Department for 35 years where he had served as President and Assistant Chief. He served on the Galena City Council in the late 1950s and early 60s. He was elected to the USD 499 School Board in 1962. He served as president of the board from 1973 until his retirement in 1997. He helped to charter the Galena Little League and then later began working with the Galena Babe Ruth Baseball League where he served as president for 20 years.

He married Inas Marie Scott on July 4, 1942, in Joplin, Mo. She preceded him in death on April 30, 1972.

Survivors include two sons, David R. Scott and Johnny L. Scott both of Galena; one daughter, Sheryl Ranae Tierney of Lancaster, Calif.; six sisters, Dorothy Sawin, Pat Karns, Janice Olick and Juanita Johnson, all of Wichita, Bonnie Long of Albuquerque, N.M., and Beverly Smith of Tampa, Fla.; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by one infant son, one brother, and two sisters.

The funeral service will be at 2 p.m., Friday, at Tennessee Prairie Friends Church. Pastor Dave Robinson will officiate. Burial will be in Hill Crest Cemetery, Galena. Military rites will be conducted at the graveside. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m., Thursday, at Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena.
