Gil was born in Puerto Rico. He served in the U.S. Army during WW2 as an M.P. Gil outlived his three siblings and Vicky, his wife of 64 years. He married Victoria 'Vicky' Fontanez in 1936. After his honorable discharge from the Army they decided to stay in Brooklyn, N.Y. Gil worked for the United States Post Office in Brooklyn for a number of years, then transferred to Beverly Hills, California.

In Brooklyn the family grew to two daughters, Maria and Diana and two sons, Gil Jr. and Daniel. By 1956, the family was then ready to follow the Brooklyn Dodgers to Los Angeles, California. Gil began work at the Beverly Hills Post Office where he met many famous movie stars. He always had a few tidbits or jokes about the famous actor he had spoken with, or spotted at the Post Office. Gil and Vicky were active members of the Baptist church in California. Gil volunteered his time to visit prisoners needing spiritual guidance at the prison. He and the pastor would visit the prisoners to offer prayers and advise. At the age of 72, Gil retired from the Post Office. At this time, and with all the children grown and out of the home, he and Vicky decided to move to Palm Springs, California, however in 1995 Gil lost the love of his life. He remained alone for a few years until diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease. His children decided he needed extra care and moved him to La Grande so that his daughter, Diana could watch over him. He spent almost 9 years living at Wildflower Lodge in La Grande, then moved to Vera's Foster Care where he received exceptional care by the Carroll family and by his daughter.

Gil died peacefully March 4, 2014. He will be interred at the Forest Lawn Cemetery in Palm Springs, California alongside his beloved wife, Vicky. Gil is survived by his four children, Maria Dominguez, Diana and husband Les Tipton, Gil Jr. and Dan and his wife, Jeanne Dominguez; grandchildren, Michel and Skye Ramos, Shawn and Lennie Ramos, Vida Dominguez, Adrian Lopez, Paloma Dominguez, Mara Dominguez; great grandson, Ezio Dominguez-Freedman.
