John A was the second oldest of five (5) children born to John O. Johnson and Sophie Frederieka (Schmidt) Johnson or Jannsen. He had two brothers Ernst Scott and Oslo. Oslo died prior to the trip to the US. He also had two (2) sisters, Mary and Hannah. All children were born in Ost Friesland and immigrated to the U.S. approximately 1876. It is not known what happened to the father, the only reference stating he died in Ohio sometime before 1917.
The family lived in Minonk, Illinois, as part of the German church and immigrant community located there. John A. met a local girl, Agatha "Aggie" Seggerman, whose family had also immigrated from Germany, and they married on 9 January 1886. From that time on, they worked on their farm located near rural Cornell, Illinois, and raised their family.
John A. and "Aggie" had two boys and three girls, Reka (Fredreka), "Lena" Halene, Clara Mae, Harry Merle and Clarence E..
When retirement age rolled around, John and Aggie bought a beautiful two story victorian home on Water Street in Pontiac, Illinois. Their daughter, Clara, cared for them in their home where they lived the rest of their lives.
