Son of Robert Harris & Nancy Grubbs who had moved their family from Albemarle county, Virginia to Madison county, Kenucky. Tyre married Sarah Garland 2 June 1803 in Garrard county, Kentucky.

Harris settled his family on Thrall's Prairie, north of Rocheport. A noted stump speaker, he was Justice of the Peace for his precinct. In 1826-28 & 1830-32 he was a Judge of the County Court of Boone. Later be became a state representative & then a state senator, 1842-46. He then served in the Mexican War 1846-1848.
