Bob was born on June 29th, 1949 in Des Moines, Iowa. He was the son of Harold and Joanne Knapp. He is survived by his former wife, Barb Knapp and his children, Bradie (Nate), BJ (Carrie) and Bailey: his grandchildren, Kelsie, Jolee, Emory and Jaden; his sister Kathy; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son Brian, his sister Deb Frisk and his parents.
Upon graduating from Roosevelt High School in 1967, Bob worked for Bodin VanDorn Clothing store in the Drake neighborhood. It was there that he met Drake student Barb Bennett and after some full time courting, they were married on November 24th, 1971.
Bob and Barb soon had Brian, who was blind shortly after birth. Brian was a child prodigy musician and Bob devoted much of his time helping Brian pursue his dream of being a country music star. Bob was an excellent father to all four of his children. He not only was their dad, he was their friend and confidant. He filled their growing up years with much excitement and adventure. Barb and the kids never knew what surprise Bob had in store for them. He was fun loving and a great practical joker - occasionally being accused of "going over the top".
Tragedy struck when, following a short illness, Brian died of leukemia at age 14. Bob spent the rest of his life dealing with this loss and doing everything he could think of to honor the memory of Brian.
Bob enjoyed much success during his life. Not only was he successful in the real estate sales and development business, he owned and operated a restaurant in Grimes for many years, had a successful music publication business and even had a pig farming operation.
Bob was also good with his hands, laboring for hours on landscaping projects at home and doing much of the trim carpentry work in his Lake Panorama cabin. He was not involved in high school sports due to his asthma, but he could play a mean game of racquetball and had an uncanny way of hitting a great golf shot with an awful looking swing. Bob loved his annual vacation to Jamaica with Barb and some of their closest friends as well as family vacations to Colorado where he enjoyed snow skiing and trips to Florida for his long walks on the beach.
Bob never met a stranger and was always the life of the party. He had a multitude of friends and they could all share a few "Bob stories". In Honor of Bob's birthday today please take a moment whether you have one of those special stories or you remember the husband, the father or the amazing man that he was. Raise a glass and have a toast because "Memories Are Forever"!
In accordance with Bob's wishes, he was buried in Glendale Cemetery next to Brian. The family would like to express their gratitude to all those who have given them so much support during these last few years.
