Madison was the fifth child of William Hickerson and Catherine Goldsberry Barksdale. He was born on the family farm in Blue River Twp., Harrison County, IN. He was a farmer and stock dealer living his entire life in Harrison County.

He married Mary Wilson daughter of Andrew Wilson and Mary Elizabeth Turley Wilson at Salem, IN. in 1869, she was probably the sister of his brother Robert's wife. They had the following children:
